Highlands Getaway
Our first trip to Highlands, North Carolina was short but packed with fun. We're already so eager to return, I literally felt like could have spent 10 days here and not gotten bored. I love the beach, but there’s nothing like the North Carolina mountains in the fall. Six years in California has made me appreciate the leaves even more, and this place has been on my list for years. We loved everything — the charming town, where we stayed, and all the delicious food.
We were there during the week, but even during peak-leaf season it did not feel too busy compared to some other mountain towns. I knew Sean would have to be working some so I wanted to have the convenience of being close to everything so I could wander on my own. The Highlands offers award-winning restaurants, a fantastic spa, and stunning hikes and views, all in one place!
Where to Stay
Parks on Main: This vintage-style hotel came highly recommended by some friends. It has spacious rooms and a beautiful courtyard, even though it doesn't have on-site dining. But don't worry, you're just a stone's throw away from all the good food on Main Street.
Where to Eat
Mountain Fresh Grocery: We stumbled upon this hidden gem on our last day. They've got everything you could ever want, from cheese to wine. We grabbed some bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits and they were absolutely delicious.
Calder’s Coffee Café: This was our mid-morning go-to spot. I'm not the biggest coffee enthusiast, but I couldn't resist their hot chocolate. Sean on the other hand is a coffee snob, and was all about their cappuccinos and pastries.
The Wine Garden: The food here was out of this world, and they had an impressive wine selection. It had that fancy feel without being overly stuffy, and the garden was like a little slice of paradise. The chicken salad sandwich was one of my fav meals of the whole trip. Lunch and a glass of wine here were some of the highlights of our trip.
Madison's Restaurant: Nestled within Old Edwards Inn, Madison’s was another hit. For dinner they are a fine dining, farm to table restaurant. We couldn't pass up their breakfast, especially their grits and chicken biscuits.
Hummingbird Lounge: Also located within Old Edwards Inn, we gave this place a try when Madison’s was fully booked. It's a more relaxed version of Madison’s, with the same fantastic menu. Whether it was espresso martinis, pork belly, or pasta, you couldn't go wrong.
Ristorante Paoletti: Who can resist Italian? This restaurant has been in the same family for almost seven decades! It's a more upscale spot, perfect for special occasions or a romantic date night. Sean was particularly fond of it, and the pasta dishes were to die for. Don't forget to try their meatball appetizers.
What To Do
Golf at Old Edwards Club: The views were absolutely stunning, even though we may have lost a few golf balls along the way. There are so many courses in the area so if you’re an avid golfer this is your place.
Scenic Hikes: Hiking in the mountains is an absolute must. Dry Falls is an easy little trail with a big payoff. You can walk right down to get down to the bottom of the falls, and even go behind them. Sunset Rock is perfect for a picnic or a relaxing happy hour, and you can’t beat the views overlooking the Highlands. We also made a quick stop at Bridal Veil Falls on our way out. It's worth going to see this 120 ft waterfall and you might even catch a rainbow. With the sun and changing leaves, it was the perfect way to end the trip. Taking a drive along Route 64 through Nantahala National Forest was an incredible experience, though it's a bit twisty, so don't forget those motion sickness meds. The views were definitely worth it. We wished we'd stopped at Cullasaja Falls, a bit of a hidden treasure with no sign, but it’s worth keeping your eyes peeled for.
Spa at Old Edwards: We couldn't pass up a spa day at Old Edwards, which was rated Conde Nast's top hotel spa in North America. So, so relaxing. I would recommend getting there early before your appointment in order to relax by the fire. Whether you book a facial or massage you cannot go wrong — but slots fill up quickly so book early.
Pools at Old Edwards: They actually have two heated salt water pools but we only explored the Hickory Falls Pool. You might be wondering why we were hitting the pool in October, but we're big pool people. In the summer, the pool even has a full-service bar and serves lunch and light appetizers. Don’t sleep on the hot tubs during the cold months.
Shop: I did some shopping and window shopping, and there are so many great stores, from antiques to high fashion, and some excellent men's shops too. My top store pics were Vivace AND Mirror lake antiques,
What I Wore
Since I'm usually by the coast, I was thrilled to experience the crisp fall air. I packed a lot of layers because the weather can be quite unpredictable. Some athletic gear was a must for hikes or a round of golf. During the day, jeans and a sweater were our go-to, and for dinner, I decided to dress up a bit with a dress or skirt paired with some boots. Shop what I packed below.
Whether you're up for a lot or a little, the Highlands has something for everyone. I can't wait to return to the Highlands and create even more unforgettable memories! Stay tuned for more adventures.
